The Road to U.S. Citizenship

Permanent Legal Resident
As a legal permanent resident, you may file for U.S. citizenship if you've:
- Maintained legal permanent residency status for five or more years
- Met the physical presence requirement of 30 months on U.S. soil within the last five years
- Not remained outside the U.S. for one year or more
If you're a legal permanent resident who's married to and living with a U.S. citizen, you must have:
- Maintained legal permanent residency status for at least three years
- Met the physical presence requirement of 18 months on U.S. soil within the last three years
- Not remained outside the U.S. for one year or more
There are other requirements relating to your criminal history, knowledge of U.S. history, and proficiency with the English language.
